The Different Types Of Diabetes And Their Associated Symptoms

When the body can no longer produce insulin, or the body becomes incapable of utilizing the insulin that is produced, diabetes occurs. Type 1 Diabetes
Formerly called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, or juvenile diabetes, is a permanent form of the disease in which the pancreas quits producing insulin. Without insulin, the body becomes incapable of using glucose (blood sugar) for energy.

Type 2 Diabetes

Also called adult diabetes or non-insulin-dependent diabetes, occurs when the body continues to produce insulin, but the body doesn’t use it properly or the insulin produced is faulty. This form is frequently associated with poor diet and obesity.

Common symptoms of type 1 and 2 diabetes are:

- increased urination
- excessive thirst
- feeling tired or fatigued
- weight loss
- excessive appetite
- blurred vision

Gestational Diabetes

This is a condition that appears only in pregnant women. This is the result of the glucose level becoming elevated and additional diabetic symptoms appear during pregnancy in a woman who has not formerly been diagnosed with diabetes. It is typically associated with hormonal impalance. After delivery of the baby the symptoms typically disappear.

There are typically no symptoms at all with gestational diabetes.

Infrequent symptoms of gestational diabetes are:

- nausea and vomiting
- vaginal, bladder and skin infections
- blurred vision
- excessive thirst
- increased urination
- weight loss
- excessive appetite
- feeling tired or fatigued

There is also a condition called pre-diabetes in which glucose levels become abnormally high but not enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Many of those who get pre-diabetes will develop type 2 diabetes later in life. It is important to stay in shape and eat properly to postpone or prevent this from happening.
